In this work, we aim to reflect on the difficulties faced by Physics researchers at the Institute of Physics (INFIS), Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU), in communicating Quantum Mechanics in order to encourage conceptual and attitudinal changes regarding scientists' involvement in communicating with the public. To do this, we draw on knowledge about the role of researchers in science communication/extension and the relationship between physicists and advocates of quantum mysticism. We conducted a semi-structured interview, focusing our discussions on the challenges that researchers face in science communication and/or extension and the difficulties that arise in this process from their perspectives. We invited postgraduate students in Physics (master's and doctorate) and professors at INFIS/UFU to participate in the study. To organize the data, we listened to each recording and transcript, identifying passages in which participants mentioned aspects related to the items of interest. Researchers highlighted various aspects, including the lack of institutional support, the negative attitudes of some colleagues towards science communication activities, which they deem useless and unnecessary, and the difficulty of communicating some topics in Quantum Mechanics as they are not attractive enough to interest people outside the field of Physics. Some researchers also questioned the value of discussing the fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics with the public. We believe it is necessary to work with researchers to clarify the potential of science communication when professionals in this field and Physics research work in partnership. This will also help to expand the vision on the possibilities of communicating with the public. Therefore, we suggest the need for institutional support and recognition of science communication activities as a valuable contribution to society. We hope our work contributes to the development of a culture of communication and engagement between researchers and the public.Downloads
