Abstract

ABSTRACT: In Brazil, the funk is symbol of the periphery. Considering that identities are linguistic constructions inserted in relations of power – the political acts of naming identities provides them social existence –, this paper has the goal to understand how the identity of the youth from the periphery of Rio de Janeiro that consume and produce funk – coined as funk carioca – is constituted and named. I located my investigation in a multidisciplinary field, where I conciliate a pragmatic conception of language as a political act to the ethnographical argument, which shows that the researcher should understand the subjects analyzed in “their own terms”.
