Resumo

ABSTRACT: This presentation is part of a dissertation thesis which aims is to analyze Machado de Assis' narrator point of view concerning slavery as well as the relationship between masters and slaves. This essay aims to highlight the dialogue between Machado de Assis works and the movie Quanto vale ou é por quilo? by Sérgio Bianchi. The moviemaker has made a free adaptation to the short story 'Pai contra mãe' which contains contemporary scenes that send the reader to the writer's texts. Therefore, the slavery ideology appears in the movie under different masks: racism, exploitation of human poverty and misery, consumerism.
