Abstract

The author analyses the formal characteristics of the famous longiloquium of the guard in Sophocles' Antigone (Vv. 223-236) and compares these with what is known about the formal aspects of the language of guilty slaves from the lost μακρòς λόγος / λόγοι ἄτακτοι of Simonides. Based on examination of the scarce testimonia about the lost work of Simonides, the author concludes that μακρòς λόγος / λόγοι ἄτακτοι were both in subject (guilty slaves trying to justify themselves) as well as in form (Iong non-sequitllr speeches) similar to the speech of the guardo Therefore, the author concludes that Sophocles might have had Simonides' work in mind as he created the role of the guard in Antigone.
