Abstract

It is a translation of the play Ἐκκλησιάζουσαι (The Assembly of Women) by Aristophanes into Portuguese. We opted for a translation that maintained a reasonable accuracy to the original, but at the same time tried to bring humor and Aristophanes’ intentions to a Portuguese language that are used on a daily bases on Brazil from the beginning of the 21st century. We emphasize that this translation aims an audience not specialized in Aristophanes or ancient Greek, but people who are interested in reading an ancient comedy in a friendly and accessible language. In addition, we wrote a brief introduction to ancient Greek culture, some explanatory notes about the play and justifications to the translation process.
